Radiation Therapist 1

The Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI) is seeking a Radiation Therapist to work with other professionals and support staff.

HUPTI is the nation’s 8th proton therapy facility and the largest free-standing proton clinic in the world. The state-of-the-art treatment and research center has four gantry rooms and one fixed beam room. HUPTI has been treating prostate, brain, lung, pediatric, head and neck, breast, CNS and other cancers since August 2010. HUPTI uses IBA’s Proteus 235 proton therapy delivery system, VeriSuite for IGRT, Mosaiq Oncology Information System (Elektra), Eclipse Proton Treatment Planning system (Varian) and a 4D-PET/CT for simulations (Philips).

Our Proteus 235 system is equipped with IBA’s universal nozzles. We are using Uniform Scanning, Double Scattering, and Pencil Beam Scanning treatment delivery techniques in our treatment rooms.

Job Description:

HUPTI Radiation Therapists deliver proton therapy treatments following HUPTI policies and procedures with the highest quality and compassion for patients and their families. They will work with other team members to accurately deliver treatment following MD’s prescription, by:

  • Administering radiation treatments to patients in accordance with the prescription and radiation oncologist’s instructions
  • Obtaining localization radiographs according to planned treatment delivery
  • Performing proton radiation therapy procedures and operating equipment
  • Collecting and documenting data acquired during the simulation procedure
  • Accurately inputting treatment related data into the oncology record and verify system
  • Providing safety in patient care through the consistent practice of departmental procedures for treatment administration
  • Potentially assisting with ordering supplies and maintaining quality control in accordance with facility and department standards
  • Explaining treatment procedures to patients and/or family members and responding effectively to patient inquiries, referring medical questions to appropriate personnel
  • Maintaining effective working relationships with patients, providers, management, staff and the public
  • Performing other duties as assigned


In collaboration with other professional and support staff, the HUPTI Radiation Therapist:

  • Responsible for the delivery of safe, accurate radiation therapy treatments according to the prescription provided by the Radiation Oncologist and any treatment protocol
  • Responsible for scheduling patients, maintaining coordination of treatment related activities and performing patient education
  • Responsible for efficient delivery of treatments and with maximum patient satisfaction
  • Follows established department policy for acquiring digital portal images, or performs other localization techniques to verify accuracy of patient treatment position
  • Able to physically assist patients entering and exiting the treatment area, as well as on and off the treatment table (this requires the ability to lift and move)
  • Able to successfully pass basic radiation safety training

  • 0-2 years of experience practicing as an RTT
  • Have successfully completed a formal radiation therapy technologist program from an accredited institution and currently is certified with ARRT
  • Possess a current Virginia license as a Radiologic Technologist, or can obtain one upon hire
