Dr. Christopher Sinesi has demonstrated excellence in the field of oncology, serving thousands of patients in the Hampton Roads region for the past 20 years. He has developed radiation centers at numerous hospitals in Hampton Roads and North Carolina, bringing state-of-the-art cancer care close to home for his patients. His partners at Oncology Associates of Virginia have been named Best in Virginia by Hampton Roads Magazine. Sinesi has also been involved with protons and heavy particle radiation since the 1980′s.
Dr. Allan Thornton is an internationally recognized physician with over 20 years experience in proton therapy and an expert in head, neck and brain tumors. He has served thousands of patients across the country at renowned facilities such as Harvard University (Massachusetts General Hospital) and the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute (MPRI), where he served as founding medical director. Dr. Thornton brings his passion for cancer care and his world-class experience to the Hampton Roads region.
Dr. Tyvin A. Rich specializes in gastrointestinal and lung cancers. With over 30 years of experience, countless awards and over 200 published papers and book chapters, he is recognized nationally as one of the top doctors in his field by Castle Connelly and Good Housekeeping magazine. Rich received his medical degree from the University of Virginia, where he also served as professor of radiation oncology for 20 years.
Dr. Bert W. Holmes, Jr. M.D. (Brig Gen Ret.) brings a spirit of excellence in leadership to Hampton University. During his 30 years serving in the military, Holmes became the first African American state surgeon in the National Guard, senior flight surgeon and the first African American assistant adjutant general. He retired as a highly decorated brigadier general in the Virginia Army National Guard. Holmes received his medical degree and specialty training in urology from the Howard University School of Medicine and is currently the university physician for Hampton University.
HUPTI Staff – Medical
Marybeth Sullivan-Dickey brings over 16 years experience in the field of proton therapy. She has served patients at the Midwest Proton Therapy Institute (MPRI) in Indiana and Harvard University (Massachusetts General Hospital). Sullivan-Dickey has particular expertise in complex treatment deliveries with adults and pediatrics.
HUPTI Staff — Administrative
Vahagn Nazaryan brings a wealth of knowledge in physics and proton therapy to the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute team with over 10 years experience in research, technology and operations. Nazaryan oversees all clinical and operational aspects of the institute, including physics, dosimetry, radiation therapy, clinic services, HUPTI technology service and maintenance, and research at the institute. Previously, Nazaryan has been a key physicist in the successful opening and operation of the institute, a medical physics research supervisor and assistant professor at HU. Nazaryan has also served four years in administration for ProTom International, a cutting edge proton therapy delivery system manufacturer, most recently the senior vice president of physics and technology. Nazaryan is involved in several research projects that seek to improve the effectiveness of proton therapy and has served as co-PI on several research grants with over a dozen research publications to his credit. He coauthors two patents in radiation therapy delivery methods. Nazaryan received a Ph.D. in Particle Physics from The College of William and Mary, and an M.S. in Physics from Yerevan State University in Armenia.
Pamela M. Cole is responsible for the overall financial management operations of HUPTI and has over 15 years of experience related to human resources, finance, accounting and auditing. Cole previously worked at Hampton University as chief accountant in the Business Office, where she managed the daily operations of multiple departments. Prior to joining HU, she worked in a variety of other industries for various Fortune 500 companies. Cole received her undergraduate accounting degree from Kansas State University and is currently a certified public accountant.
