Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and Cox Media Visit the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute for their Spotlight on the Peninsula

The Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce held their Spotlight on the Peninsula at the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI), the largest free-standing proton therapy facility in the world, on Friday, April 26th.

The event, sponsored by Cox Communications, featured a tour of the 98,000 sq. foot facility and one of its 3-story gantry treatment rooms, as well as a presentation on the mission of the institute and features of proton therapy by HUPTI’s Executive Director, Dr. Vahagn Nazaryan, as well as testimonials from Stuart Goodman and Lawrence Davis, both prostate cancer survivors, recent graduates and ambassadors of the Institute.

Coordinated by Bob McKenna, the President, and CEO of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and Bill Thomas, the Associate VP of Governmental Relations at Hampton University, this event brought business and community leaders together from all over Hampton Roads to witness the trailblazing work that is being done at the Institute.

The Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute is the only proton therapy cancer treatment center in Virginia and one of only 28 in the US. Since opening in 2010, HUPTI has treated over 3,000 patients for breast, lung, prostate, head and neck, ocular, GI, brain and spine, pediatric and other cancers utilizing proton therapy, a noninvasive and millimeter precise form of radiation which spares healthy surrounding tissue and leads to fewer side effects.

The Institute has also worked with several organizations and civic groups to educate the local community on their cancer treatment options, provide the needed funding for proton therapy treatment to indigent patients through an annual Gala of Hope and raise money for cancer research. HUPTI is committed to continuing the fight against cancer through treatment, community outreach, philanthropic pursuits, and charitable giving.

“We would like to thank the team at the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute for hosting us on Friday,” said Megan Whiteaker, Event Coordinator for the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. “HUPTI has a wonderful facility; we thank them for all they are doing for the community.”
