HUPTI will assist you in collecting the necessary documents, such as clinical reports, biopsy results and insurance forms. Gathering this information can take about a week. Once all the documents are compiled, and your insurance has been verified, we will schedule your consultation appointment with the radiation oncologist.
At this appointment you will be greeted by one of the HUPTI nursing staff, the nurse will sit with you and fill out a medical history and take your vitals, such as blood pressure, temperature etc. Once the nursing duties are complete, the radiation oncologist will start the consultation visit with you, and if you choose, your loved ones may attend. The radiation oncologist will evaluate your specific case and discuss your best treatment options with you. Please bring your questions with you; this is a great time to discuss your questions with the radiation oncologist. If you and your radiation oncologist decide to proceed with proton therapy, outside appointments may be required.
Once the decision has been made to proceed with proton therapy, a simulation appointment will be scheduled. At this visit you will meet some of the radiation therapy team. These team members will explain everything that will be accomplished during this appointment, such as a custom fit immobilization device designed and constructed specifically for you during treatment. The simulation is done using a CT scan machine. You will be placed on the table, lying in your custom immobilization device. The CT scan will then be performed and all of the information gathered will assist the radiation oncology team in planning your prescribed treatment.
Treatments are conducted Monday - Friday and will begin after the treatment planning process is complete. The treatments can last between 6 - 9 weeks. The length of treatment is prescribed for each individual case.
