Medical Assistant

The Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI) is a non-profit cancer treatment center located in Hampton, Virginia that specializes in proton therapy. HUPTI is recruiting an outstanding Medical Assistant to join our team.

HUPTI is the nation’s 8th proton therapy facility and the largest freestanding proton clinic in the world. The state-of-the-art treatment and research center has four gantry rooms and one fixed beam room. HUPTI has been treating prostate, brain, lung, pediatric, head and neck, breast, CNS and other cancers since August 2010. HUPTI uses IBA’s Proteus 235 proton therapy delivery system, VeriSuite for IGRT, Mosaiq Oncology Information System (Elektra), Eclipse Proton Treatment Planning system (Varian) and 4D-PET/CT for simulation (Philips).

HUPTI’s Proteus 235 system is equipped with IBA’s universal nozzles. We are using Uniform Scanning, Double Scattering, and Pencil Beam Scanning treatment delivery techniques in our treatment rooms.

The Medical Assistant (MA) provides patient care under the supervision of the RN / LPN and within scope of practice.  This position reports to the Nursing Operation Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares patients for physician office visit, including vital signs, assisting with and during physical exams and documentation of such in the EMR.
  • Assist RN/LPN to organize new patient records.
  • Work with RN/LPN to adhere to timely office visits and communicate with patients should there be any delay in schedules.
  • Communicate with all assigned patients on a weekly basis and more often if needed.
  • Drawing blood as directed by physicians.
  • Preparing exam rooms and equipment, assuring all rooms are clean and stocked.
  • Clinic supply inventory and requesting replacement stock to the nursing manager.
  • Scheduling patient’s follow-up appointments.
  • Assisting the RN/LPN to track and obtain reports of scans/ procedures.
  • Prepare OV visit summary and capture / transmit to the patient portal.
  • Providing education and assisting in addressing patient care concerns.
  • Communicating with outside physicians/medical offices as needed for patient care.  
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience Requirements:

  • Previous related experience in a busy healthcare environment strongly preferred.

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills are required.
  • High level of confidentiality and professionalism are required.

Educational Requirements:

  • Possess training or certification as a Medical Assistant or Medical Technician
