HU Proton Therapy Institute To Host Free Seminar
Hampton, Va. – The Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI) will host an informational seminar Wed, May 9, at 6:00 pm, at 40 Enterprise Parkway in Hampton. The general public is encouraged to come and hear about cancer prevention tips and proton therapy cancer treatment. Refreshments will be served.
Attendees will hear from Christopher Sinesi, M.D., medical director, HUPTI, Cynthia Keppel, Ph.D., scientific and technical director and former proton therapy patients.
“Proton therapy was the best choice for me, said Alfred Scott, of Hampton, Va. “My appointments were only thirty minutes each day, and the actual treatment time lasted only a minute long. I finished my eight weeks of treatment in November of 2010. I have not experienced any after effects and I didn’t even have to alter my daily routine due to any complications during treatment.”

HUPTI is the eighth proton facility in the U.S. and the largest of its kind in the world. At full operation, HUPTI is expected to treat approximately 2,000 patients per year with prostate, breast, brain, lung, head and neck, pediatric and other cancers. Proton therapy is regarded as the most precise form of cancer treatment to date, targeting only the tumor while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. The actual treatment of protons lasts less than two minutes. Patients are treated five days a week, from one to nine weeks.
