Cyclotron And Rigging Arrive, Installation Begins

Hampton, Va. – Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute’s (HUPTI) 200-ton cyclotron arrived, and installation began on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at noon.

Equipment installation is scheduled to be completed in about 12 months.

Proton therapy is regarded as the most precise form of cancer treatment available, as it targets and kills tumors with millimeter accuracy, while sparing surrounding healthy tissue, leaving the patient with minimal to no side effects, unlike conventional radiation therapy.

HUPTI is the largest free-standing proton cancer treatment center in the world, and is expected to treat over 2,000 patients per year with prostate, breast, lung and pediatric cancers upon opening in the fall of 2010.
