  • HUPTI is strategically located on the border of the mid-Atlantic and Southeastern regions of the United States.
  • HUPTI is the only proton therapy institute in Virginia.
  • The facility is a $225 million, state-of-the-art research and treatment center.
  • HUPTI is 98,000 sq. ft, and has 4 Gantry rooms, 1 fixed beam room, for a total of 5 treatment rooms.
  • HUPTI is expected to treat over 2,000 patients per year, including 65% prostate cancer treatments. The remaining 35% includes breast, lung, pediatric, and other cancers.
  • The center opened in August 2010.
  • The protons at HUPTI may be accelerated to nearly 60% of the speed of light, about 180,000 km/s, or over 402 million miles/hour.
  • The HUPTI treatment gantries weigh over 90 tons each.
